English 102 Calendar: Week four
Do the first assignment: the analysis of another writer's introduction to a persuasive paper. This site has the information that you will need to do this assignment. Follow the link below to an example of how one student did this assignment. Then go on to the explanation.
The analysis of another writer's introduction.
Now go to this site, Structure of the Essay: Analysis of Introductions. This site give you more detail about how to do this assignment. Read it and study these two students' introduction and what is written about them, including the analysis done by another student.
Now go to this site, The Analysis of Another Writer's Introduction.
Look carefully at the student example. By looking in newspapers and magazines, you find your own example. Look at the editorial pages of newspapers and news weeklies. You want to find an example that is opinionated, argumentative.
Be sure to read the essay called "The Structure of the Essay." This essay will help you with your analysis and with all of the writing that will do in this course.
To do the analysis you must name the TYPE of introduction that the writer uses (or lack of type if the author doesn't use any). First review the 10 Types of Introductions.
Sometime during this week or next you should review or learn more about what constitutes a works cited page. You will have a works cited page as part of your research paper. Failure to write a correct works cited page means that you will not receive a passing grade on the research paper. Now is the time to make sure that you understand how to construct such a page.
Take the Works Cited self-test.
If you take and pass this test, and you should take it enough times so that you will pass it, then you should have little trouble in doing the Library Log assignment or constructing the works cited page for your research paper. You do NOT have to take this test, and do not send the results to me. This is a self-teaching test, designed to help you. If you do NOT take advantage of this help, that is your business. You make the decision about how much help you think you need to do well in this course.
You should read at least the first 10 chapters of the novel, The Girl, by Meridel Le Sueur.
