English 102 Calendar: Week five
Choose one of the 100 Questions on The Girl. This assignment is your Literary Log.
Before you choose your question, look at the criteria that determine how you are graded on this assignment.
For an example of an A paper, go to Melissa White's answer to Question #5.
For an example of another A paper, go to Leah Bartrum's answer to Question #4.
Remember: you do not write a formal essay. In other words, you don't have to concern yourself with an introduction and conclusion. But you MUST take quotes from the novel and use them as part of your own sentences. And you MUST give the page numbers for these quotes. If you do not know how to do this, go back and review the sites listed on the Week one calendar, especially this one:
Frequently asked questions about the research paper:

You should also decided upon the topic for your preliminary research paper and start work on it.
When you quote from someone else's work, you must acknowledge that work. And you will be using quotations in your literary log, your literary theme, and your research papers. Be sure that you understand how to cite from those works and avoid plagiarism. Visit these sites and read carefully the explanations and examples: Plagiarism 1 and Plagiarism 2.
Without the quoted examples that are used as part of your own sentences (no hanging quotes) and without the page numbers that indicate where these quotes came from, this literary log is not acceptable.
The main thing is to go into sufficient detail to thoroughly answer the question. This log is a practice for the literary theme. It's not a formal essay.
It is due at the end of week eight.
You should read the handout, "How to Write About Literature." If you do not have that handout, go to the Week Ten calendar and follow the link to it.
