English 102 Calendar: Week Fourteen
The final draft of the literary paper is due. Don't forget. You can turn it in early if you want.. How does your paper compare to the student model papers online? Take a final look at them. Notice how they use their quoted examples. Are yours similar? Do you have any hanging quotes? Do you give page citations for all of your quotes, summaries, and paraphrases?
This is important! You MUST include the four types of citations in this paper. There are no exceptions.
My main reason for having the literary paper assignment is that every student must demonstrate the ability to use cited references correctly. By doing so, students are not therefore required to write a standard research paper. It frees students to write research papers in other than standard forms. However, since knowing how to use citations is a basic concept of research paper writing, this literary paper is the place where a student can demonstrate competency in this basic skill.
Here is how you can guarantee that you are fulfilling this requirement to use all four types of citations. Go to
Look again at the student examples. This first essay illustrates four ways of using citations. The first example is
1) a quote that is a part of the sentence, grammatically correct. Note the punctuation of every one of these examples. Notice how the period goes at the end of the sentence, but the quotation marks do not include the page numbers in parentheses.
2) a quote using a "that" clause.
3) a quote that uses only a few words from the original text and inserts them into your sentence.
4) a quote treated as dialogue, using "said." Notice that this is a long quote, three lines or over. There are no quotation marks used with long quotes. The indentations act like quotation marks. Notice also that the end punctuation is a bit different. The period goes before the page numbers in parentheses. [In this case, there is no period since the quote ends with a question mark.]
For a review of these types of quoted examples, go to the answers to The Citation Quiz.
