English 102 Calendar: Week one

For week one, you MUST send your instructor your email address

This email account must be the one that you use to send and receive messages. If you change your email, then you must inform the instructor of that change. Email is the way students send and receive assignments.

You must read the syllabus for this course. If you have any questions, then you should ask your instructor.

You should then go to this Assignments link and print out the list of assignments. When you complete an assignment, you should record your grade for that assignment, with the date on which you completed it,  so that you have an ongoing complete record of how you are doing in the class.

You should also follow every link in the online syllabus to make sure that you can access these links when you need them.

Be sure to look at Week Sixteen for the "worth" of each assignment to the final grade.

You should also access the sites below. If for some reason you cannot access these sites on your computer, you must inform your instructor.

The links below are essential for success in this course. Since all students who are enrolled in this course have taken English 101, it is assumed that you know most of the material associated with these linked sites. If you do not, then you must study the materials on these sites. English 102 assumes that the student has mastered this material.

NOTE: if you try to access a site and you get an error message, and the site has an "htm" at the end of it, as do some of these, try adding an "l" at the end [this is an "el" not a "one], making the end "html".

For the Most Common Punctuation Mistakes such as comma splice, run on sentence, etc. Note: making these mistakes in your final research paper will result in a grade reduction.

For a variety of other punctuation issues

IMPORTANT: before you even look at this FAQ site about the research paper, you must go to this page: WHAT IS A RESEARCH PAPER?

This is a very important site since it contains links to material that you MUST know. Failure to know this material will result in failing this course. What is this material? Among other things, it is:

    How to use quoted examples.

How to cite material using the MLA [Modern Language Association] style manual. We do NOT use the APA [American Psychological Association] style manual.

How to construct a Works Cited page. [There is a student model works cited page on my English 101 Library Review site. Study this model. It will provide answers to most of your questions about the works cited page.]

Duke University provides the easiest to use site that I have found for construction items for your works cited page. You should look at this site before constructing a works cited page.

You should have handy this quick and easy guide to the MLA Citations.

You should thoroughly study the information at this cite: Purdue University's Online Writing Lab. This cite will demonstrate how to construct a works cited page. You must model your page on the examples here. The works cited page is either right or it is wrong. There is no in between. There is only one way to do a works cited page in the MLA format that we use for this class.

Here are two another helpful sites: KnightCite and Easy Bib. They will do the most of the work for you! You put in the bibliographic information, press the button, and you get the correct format. What could be easier? These types of "engines" mean that now you have absolutely no excuse for not having a 100% correct works cited page.

If you do not already know how to do the above, then you must teach yourself. You can look at these sites and you can look at the student research papers that I have put online.

And, finally, look at this calendar of due dates. Keep it handy!
