English 102 Calendar Week Three

Even though you are working on the Preliminary Research Paper, and even though the final draft of this assignment is not due until Week Seven, you should also be working on the Analysis assignment. Here is some help:

Assignment Two: the Analysis of Another Writer's Introduction.

The assignment often gives students a lot of trouble. You should have by now made an attempt at it and received some comments from the instructor. Take another look at the student example. Notice how the analysis concerns itself with naming the type of introduction used by the writer, and notice that the analysis contains quoted examples from the writer's introduction. Without these quoted examples, the analysis is incomplete and unacceptable.

If you need to review the different types of Introductions, click on this site called Introductory Techniques.

Begin thinking now about your final research paper topic. This topic must have a personal connection to you. You must be able to explain why it is that you are interested in this topic.

The Library and Other Resources for the Preliminary Research Paper:

Your preliminary research paper is a practice exercise. You will demonstrate the following: 1) you can organize the paper effectively; 2) you can use textual source material, integrating the material into your own writing so that the results are grammatically correct sentences that are also punctuated correctly, 3) you can cite your sources and produce a works cited page according to the Modern Language Association model.

Your sources may be more than what you can gather from a visit to the library; however, every paper must contain at least the following sources: 1) one general source such as an encyclopedia or general website dealing with the overall topic of The Great Depression; 2) specific sources dealing with your sub-topic that include a book from the library, a magazine article, a newspaper article, an article from an online source, and an interview.

NOTE:

To check to see if your paper is complete and if the "writing about writing" techniques are done correctly, compare your paper to this student example of the preliminary research paper.

Here is a link to another student example of the preliminary research paper, this one by Ashley Lybrook..

And here is another example of the preliminary research paper assignment. This one is less personal than the other one. Notice the shift from the general topic of the Great Depression to the specific topic, in this case photography. Here is another research paper about the Great Depression, this one about music. And, finally, another one, this one by Bobbie Jo Sewell: "What’s for Dinner? A report on food during The Great Depression."

And here is another preliminary research paper, this one by Destiny Cordle. Read it for questions that you might have about how to use quotes, how to cite, how to develop your works cited page.

DUE: Week Five the rough draft of the preliminary research paper is due.
